Hi Elly, and copy to Bryony Attached is the Tas list of sponsors for the month of August 2019. You will see that Tas is heavily subsidised by online gambling companies. I’ve included these because people need to be aware of the extent to which gambling governs the ‘sport’. Some of the businesses are owned by trainers and we suspect there are more than we can positively identify. Tasracing is also a sponsor (see * note at end of list and included below) yet the Tas govt states that it doesn’t sponsor greyhound racing (see response to an RTI [FOI] question here – more smoke screens).
*Industry sponsorship *
51.*How much did the Tasmanian Government spend on the sponsorship of greyhound racing in this period?*
Answer: There was no “sponsorship of greyhound racing”. The commercial arm of the racing industry is funded through the Racing Industry Funding Deed which is in place for a period of 20 years up until 2029. The Deed provides an annual Government provision of $27 million indexed, resulting in 30.38 million being provided in 2017-2018.52.
* Tasracing was established under legislation introduced into Tasmanian State Parliament in November 2008. On 1 July 2009 Tasracing Pty Ltd, trading as Tasracing, became a state-owned company in its own right. It operates under a constitution and must abide by Australian Corporations Law.
The company has two members, the Treasurer and the Minister for Racing, who hold shares in the company in trust for the people of Tasmania.
The Director of Tasracing, John King, is also the General Manager of the Office of Racing Integrity.
